COB vs SMD vs GOB vs MIP: LED Packaging Comparison

Quick answer: SMD is the most cost-effective LED packaging for pitches of about P2 and above; GOB adds a glue layer to SMD for impact and moisture protection; COB seals bare chips on the board for the best durability and contrast in fine pitch (P0.6–P1.9); MIP sorts chips before mounting for the best color uniformity and pixel-level repair down to about P0.4.

What Is LED Display Packaging Technology?

LED packaging describes how the red, green and blue LED chips are housed and attached to the display module. It affects pixel pitch, durability, contrast, color consistency, repairability and cost. Today four technologies dominate LED screens: SMD, GOB, COB und MIP. Older DIP is still used for very bright large-pitch billboards.

SMD vs COB LED Display: Which Is Better for Fine Pitch?

Above about P1.5, SMD LED displays remain the most economical choice with mature supply chains and easy single-LED repair. Below P1.5, the exposed SMD LEDs become fragile and harder to produce, while COB-LED-Displays offer a sealed, matte-black surface with higher contrast and lower dead-pixel rates. That is why most modern fine pitch LED displays for control rooms and boardrooms use COB.

GOB vs COB: LED Screen Protection Compared

Both protect the LEDs, but in different ways. GOB coats finished SMD modules with transparent glue, making rental and touchable LED screens far more resistant to knocks. COB integrates protection at the chip level, which also enables finer pixel pitch. Choose GOB for rental and XR stages that are set up often; choose COB for permanent fine-pitch indoor LED video walls.

MIP vs COB: Which Leads to Micro LED?

MIP tests and sorts tiny LED chips before mounting, so color uniformity is excellent and single pixels can be replaced. COB gives stronger surface protection and is already widely deployed. Both are routes toward Micro LED displays; premium variants such as QDCOB add quantum dots for an even wider color gamut.

How to Choose the Right LED Packaging

Which LED packaging to choose: SMD, GOB, COB, MIP, QDCOB or DIP selection guide for LED displays
  • SMD: pitch P2 or larger, best value, indoor or outdoor.
  • GOB: rental, touchable or floor LED screens that must survive knocks.
  • COB: fine pitch P0.9–P1.5, 24/7 control rooms, easy cleaning.
  • MIP: premium color at P1.2 or below, Micro LED ready, pixel-level repair.
  • QDCOB: luxury retail or broadcast needing the widest color gamut.
  • DIP: very bright large-pitch outdoor billboards (P10+).

DDW Engineer Notes: LED Packaging Comparison

There is no single best LED packaging — only the best fit for pitch, environment and budget. In our projects, SMD still covers most outdoor and rental screens, COB has become the default below P1.5 for control rooms, and MIP is growing fastest in premium and broadcast projects.

FAQ

Which is better, COB or SMD?

For fine pitch below about P1.5, COB is usually better thanks to its sealed surface, higher contrast and fewer dead pixels. For P2 and larger, SMD offers the best value and easiest repair.

What is the difference between GOB and COB?

GOB adds a protective glue layer on top of finished SMD modules, while COB mounts bare chips directly on the board and seals them. COB supports finer pixel pitch; GOB upgrades SMD durability.

Is MIP better than COB?

MIP offers better color uniformity through chip sorting and single-pixel repair, while COB offers stronger surface protection. Both are leading choices for fine-pitch and Micro LED displays.

Which LED packaging is best for outdoor LED screens?

Outdoor LED screens mostly use outdoor-grade SMD packages with IP65 protection; DIP is still used for very bright large-pitch billboards.
