Common Cathode vs Common Anode LED Display

Quick answer: In a common anode LED display, red, green and blue LEDs share one supply voltage (around 5 V). In a common cathode design, each color gets its own optimized voltage (for example about 2.8 V for red and 3.8 V for green and blue). Common cathode therefore wastes less power as heat, runs cooler and typically uses 20–40% less energy.

Gemeinsame Kathode vs. gemeinsame Anode

  • LED-Leistungsabfall
  • Farbabweichung
  • Ausfallraten

This is why energy-efficient architectures are increasingly important.

DDW Engineer Notes: Common cathode LED display

FAQ

Is common cathode better than common anode?

For energy efficiency, heat and long-term reliability, common cathode is generally better; common anode remains cheaper and widely used.

Why does common cathode reduce heat?

Because each color receives only the voltage it needs, less excess voltage is turned into heat in the driver circuits.

Can I tell if an LED screen is common cathode?

Check the specification sheet or ask the manufacturer; common cathode is usually highlighted as an energy-saving feature.
